The Absolute Sound 40th Anniversary Best Sounding Music!

11th Latin Grammy Award Winning Album!

Grammy Award winning Yarlung Records brings fresh musicians to the classical music world using minimalist audiophile recording techniques to deliver sound as close to a live performance as possible. Rather than using recording studios, engineer Bob Attiyeh produces these albums in concert halls famous for their acoustics, including Walt Disney Concert Hall and Ambassador Hall in Los Angeles. Yarlung uses analog tape for 180g vinyl LPs mastered by Steve Hoffman.

Yarlung repertoire ranges from the 11th century through the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, with a special focus on new music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Artists include top soloists as well as superstar young musicians at the beginnings of their international concert careers. Yarlung brings artists into your living room; you can hear their music, their breathing, and almost their heartbeats.

Yarlung Records commissioned famed Argentine composer Lalo Schifrin to write Pampas for this recording. The work evokes the rich grasslands stretching from Buenos Aires to Patagonia. Schifrin writes “The first theme is distant and evocative which leads to a contrasting section of rhythmic energy… This work was commissioned by violoncello Master Antonio Lysy for which I’m very grateful.”

Antonio Lysy captures the cultural range of this country in this recording. He chose these particular works because they all draw inspiration from the folk music traditions of Argentina. This album highlights the ‘cello as a solo instrument and illustrates the impact of pre-Hispanic Amerindian traditions and Spanish based Creole influences as well as the effect of more modern musical developments like the tango on Argentine composers.

This album was recorded using an AKG C-24 stereo microphone with its original brass surround CK12 tube from Gearworks Pro Audio. Also used were Agfa 468 tape, five-foot long Yarlung-Records-designed stranded silver interconnects, customized vacuum tube preamplifiers and no mixer. The signal path was as short as possible, with as few electronics between performer and final product. There is no compression or limiting on this LP, and thanks to Doug Sax and his custom all-tube equipment at The Mastering Lab in Ojai, California, this LP sounds just like the master tape!

“Among the most beautiful recordings of cello and piano you are likely ever to hear.”

-Michael Fremer, Musicangle, June 2011

“Cellist Antonio Lysy and pianist Bryan Pezzone play gorgeously and are gorgeously recorded. Sonics are holographic in clarity and presence, rich in tonal splendor, and revealing of the venue (Santa Monica’s The Broad Stage). Just listen to the deeply resonant cello pizzicatos that reverberate into silence at the end Schifrin’s Pampas. This is one of the most realistic and beautiful records I’ve heard – ever.”

-Mark Lehman, The Absolute Sound, December 2012
