Hear how Tom Fine, the son of the original recording engineer Robert Fine, and original producer Wilma Cozart Fine, VP of Mercury Records’ classical division, handled duties as both the reissue producer and remastering engineer for the Mercury Living Presence Vinyl Series. Here.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Mercury Living Presence label and its distinctive sound. To celebrate Decca Classics is planning to release the complete digital catalog and reissue selected titles on CD and vinyl.
Series 1 includes five beloved titles from the famed classical music label, newly remastered from the original master tapes and cut to vinyl at half-speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, and pressed at Optimal in Germany on 180-gram super-quiet vinyl.
Long a collector favorite, this early stereo recording now remastered at Abbey Road presents a set of lively American light classics like “Mexican Rhapsody,” “Savannah River Holiday,” “Kentucky Mountain Portraits” and “Joe Clark Steps Out.” Decca Classics presents the Mercury Living Presence Series, a new audiophile series of vinyl mastered at half-speed and featuring precision HD transfers of the original first-generation tapes.
A Note About Listening Levels
Mercury Living Presence recordings are highly dynamic, pushing the technical capabilities of the original recording equipment to the limit. In a modern setting, especially in the context of a Half-Speed Mastered LP, the full dynamic range on the tapes makes its way to the grooves.
This may require the listener to turn up the system volume to a higher level than they may be accustomed to.
All efforts were made to present these discs on quiet, high-quality vinyl, so listening at “concert hall levels” should not include an objectionable increase in background surface noise.
Turn it up, experience the 3D sound field, and enjoy the lifelike dynamics; put yourself in the Living Presence of the music!
